The Manifesto of the Cloud Appreciation Society

Manifesto Exhibition Series (4)

Original Source

Another in the "less serious" genre, The Manifesto of the Cloud Appreciation Society is also short in length. Perhaps this is a common theme; those who take themselves very seriously tend to be prolific, while those who approach their writing a bit lighter at heart tend to feel that less is more.

This piece begins with a very strong, "WE BELIEVE", in all caps. Regardless of what comes next, we know that the authors believe it, in the loudest of caps.

In the original, (and apparently in my re-post as well) the aphorisms are separated by little cloud characters: a nice touch.

I also like the closing with a poetic quote. I feel that it is a fitting capstone to such a poetic vision as an appreciation of all weather, regardless of moisture content.

WE BELIEVE that clouds are unjustly maligned
and that life would be immeasurably poorer without them.
cloud

We think that they are Nature’s poetry,

and the most egalitarian of her displays, since
everyone can have a fantastic view of them.

cloud

We pledge to fight ‘blue-sky thinking’ wherever we find it.
Life would be dull if we had to look up at

cloudless monotony day after day.

cloud

We seek to remind people that clouds are expressions of the
atmosphere’s moods, and can be read like those of
a person’s countenance.

cloud

Clouds are so commonplace that their beauty is often overlooked.
They are for dreamers and their contemplation benefits the soul.
Indeed, all who consider the shapes they see in them will save
on psychoanalysis bills.

cloud

And so we say to all who’ll listen:
Look up, marvel at the ephemeral beauty, and live life with your head in the clouds!

“I love the clouds… the clouds that pass…
up there… up there… the wonderful clouds!”
[The Stranger, Charles Baudelaire]

Here on Welcome to the Interdome, we're trying something new: a curated blog exhibition. There are many blogs that treat themselves as an ongoing exhibition of any number of topics. Welcome to the Interdome largely follows the interests of its author, wherever that may lead. But, for the next series of twenty-or-so posts (in hopefully quick succession) we're going to showcase some various manifestos found around the Internet. They are not comprehensive, not even representative of the full-breath of material that exists. But, they each represent something interesting about the form, and will be accompanied by curated comments.

None of the manifestos posted are posted with explicit permission. They are all found published on the web, free for any to read, and links will be provided to the original location. I am showing them out of the original context here, to first analyze the content. Then, one may proceed to the original site to look at other interesting things like host site, format, font, pictures, and other available materials.

We invite you to read, and to comment if you like. If you want to or have written your own manifesto, send it along! If it's interesting/funny/different we'll through it up there.

If at any time you want to see the full exhibit, click the tag "Manifestos Exhibition", below. That should take you to all the relevant exhibits, that all have the same tag. The preamble to the exhibition can be found here.

Enjoy!
